Sea & Beaches
As you travel from Scauri to Sperlonga, the coastline offers a magnificent variety of beaches, bays and sand: this is probably the stretch of coast in which Nature has done its utmost to create as many different sights as possible.
Scauri offers 4 km of free, private and equipped of sandy beach. We kindly suggest to visit the simply charming “Spiaggia dei Sassolini”, at the back of Monte D’Oro.
The nearest beach is Gianola beach is quite crowded in August and July but lovely in the rest of the year. The beautiful Gianola promontory is at less the 1 km and is part of the Riviera di Ulisse Urban Park.
Arrived in Formia, located near the Aurunci Mounts, running from the elegant Vendicio beach.
Gaeta offers the long beach of Serapo, residential area complete with villas, chalets, hotels, restaurants and beach facilities for bathers. Monte Orlando (that is a natural park) overlooks the sea, with its grassy slopes bathed in the water: Montagna Spaccata is a great cleft rock face with a sheer drop to the coastline below, and nearby is the Grotta of Turco.
Shopping
In Scauri there are many business activities, restaurants, pharmacy, fashion shops, bar, pub, supermarket, home furnishing shop, etc.
The supermarket are along the Via Appia but in Formia, close to Scauri there is a big Shopping Center, Centro Commerciale ITACA (open from 9 am till 10 pm, all week days).
For the fish lovers we suggest the shop “Purificato”, in Formia, close to the Hospital.
The main fashion street is Via Vitruvio in Formia.

Sport
Scauri offer the possibility of practicing, in every season of the year, a lot of outdoor/filed sports thanks to the mild clime and natural resources according to sports and open air lovers.
Tennis court is just 1,5 km far from the apartment, opposite to the train station; there are numerous Five a Side Courts (five players on each side); running along the beach and in open country is the best way to do it. Basketball courts are both outdoor and indoor.
Therefore, the Olimpic Training Centre in Formia offer high standard services in order to support the technical and aghonistic activities with a focus on Track and Field, Fencing, Boxing, Rugby, and Martial Arts.
The Centre provides several indoor facilities which allows the athletic training during all the year, as the OTC includes an indoor 6 lanes straight (150 m) and a specific indoor area for high and long jump and for pole vault. The OTC provides excellent equipment, facilities and supports for the athletic preparation that is the basis for many sport disciplines. Winter and aquatic sports often train at the OTC, which stated specific instruments studied and created to satisfy the needs of this type of athletic training.
Walks & Bike
You can take walks in the green area, go on a mountain-bike excursion, visit the surroundings,.... you won't be bored.
Therefore, leaving from LivingApple by bike, you can reach a beaten track in an open countryside and enjoy in touch with the still unspoilt nature.
For early riser people we suggest walks or bike along the sea shore.
A 4 km seafront allows to do long walks on foot or by bike.
For trekking lovers, the trekking activities can be organized by specialized Associations that work on the territory and offer different possibilities from climbing, trekking on foot, on horseback, on mountain bike or to more specific speleological finds, activities and explorations. These Associations work in close relationship with the Natural Park of the Aurunci and the Natural Reserve of the Lazio Region. They are: CAI (Centro Alpino Italiano) of Esperia, the Association Nature Trend that both do the walking itineraries.
Then there is the Association Maremoto of Formia that organizes trekking on mountain bikes and has instructors SIMB for all levels. For the horse lovers there are two associations "La Compagnia degli Aurunci" and "La Rinchiusa" which both organize horseback riding day trips in the woods.
Cuisine
The cuisine of this area reflects a simpler, more rustic approach to cooking that relies heavily on the produce and livestock common to the area. Vegetables, grains, fruits, fish, cheeses and a scattering of meats, fowl and game usually seasoned or cooked with olive oil. Pasta and vegetables are often served alongside.
The regional cooking is characterized by a large variety of pasta dishes, fish and sea-food specialities like spaghetti with clams, fish-soup, octopus, raw sea-food or soup, fried mixed fish. The pizza in its many varieties is the legitimate pride of this people for their creativity in a natural, simple and inexpensive cooking.
The "Tiella di Polipi" (an old style fisherman breakfast), the world wide famous "Olives of Gaeta", the "Marzolino" cheese and the "Buffalo Mozzarella", just to mention a few, are some specialties of the area whose excellent wine is still made with the same type of grapes the Romans used for their "sweet nectar." A ritual takes place at sunset (as many visitors have learned by the locals) when the fishing boats return: it is the wait on the docks to secure a fresh catch of fish, like some "Fragolino," a couple of "Polipi di scoglio”, tasty "Alicette" or "Aragoste di Ponza." All highly valued ingredients for an authentic, genuine and unforgettable dinner at dusk, when the sun goes down in the Tyrrhenian Sea, on the "Ulysses' Coast."
The reliance upon what the country can produce has shaped a diet popular for centuries, particularly with the poorer Italian people, and is called “la cucina povera”. Now we are seeing a resurgence of this "poor people's food" and the Mediterranean diet is being touted as the model around which we should restructure our eating habits. La caprese is one of the summers favourite fresh dishes: buffalo milk mozzarella, tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil and basil.
The Itri village, only at a few miles away from the sea and is historically a southern Lazio’s door to the inland mountains, is famous since the medieval age for its production of olive oil and pickled olives, the ‘Itrane’, better known and marketed in the medieval age all around the Mediterranean as Gaeta’s olives. Extensive olive groves are a feature of the countryside and Itri seems to blend perfectly in its own bucolic landscape. Its olives and olive oil are exported all over the world.
